Where research meets recovery

Our Research
Explore our current research projects below as we work to improve stroke rehabilitation through innovative, evidence-based research.
Each project is designed not only to advance the delivery of stroke rehabilitation but, more importantly, to improve the lives of stroke survivors and their families by translating research into meaningful clinical practice.
Innovating and testing new approaches to accelerate recovery after stroke
We know that intensive, repetitive practice drives recovery after stroke, but we are continuing to ask: can we help the brain become even more ready to learn? This Medical Research Future Fund-supported adaptive platform trial is exploring whether cardiovascular exercise before rehabilitation can prime the brain and enhance recovery. By combining advances in exercise science, neuroscience, and rehabilitation, this project aims to identify new ways to maximise the benefits people gain from intensive therapy.
Taking bootcamps to the communities that need it most
Access to intensive rehabilitation remains a major challenge for people living in rural Australia. This wait-list controlled trial is bringing Stroke Boot Camp to regional South Australia, while building the capacity of local clinicians to deliver this innovative model of care (funded by The Hospital Research Foundation). The project will establish services in Whyalla and Mount Gambier — communities within the Federal Electorates of Grey and Barker, which have among the highest stroke prevalence rates in Australia. By partnering with rural clinicians and communities, we aim to make high-quality, intensive rehabilitation accessible regardless of where someone lives.
